Alistair Bell
Born in Darlington, England in 1913, Alistair Bell lived in Vancouver from 1929 until his death in 1997. Bell was principally a self-taught printmaker who spent his life mastering the techniques of drypoint, etching, wood engraving and wood cutting. Two Canada Council Senior Art Fellowships at critical points in his artistic evolution enabled him to travel and eventually devote full time to his art. The pre-eminent BC printmaker of his generation, Bell represented Canada in several international exhibitions. Bell’s prints are in many public and private collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, Museum of Modern Art, New York, and The National Gallery of Canada. He has had many solo exhibitions from 1951 to the present. Alistair Bell’s varied and distinguished body of prints and drawings has been represented by the Bau-Xi since 1970.
Alistair Bell’s most recent exhibition focused on his boat prints, and took place December, 2008 at Bau-Xi Gallery Vancouver.
