  Lisa  Birke

Lisa Birke attended Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design where she was awarded full tuition scholarships for three consecutive years graduating with a B.A. in 1998 and a B.F.A. in 1999.
Birke paints traditional landscape and still life as a backdrop for line drawn characterizations of ordinary people stuck in tragic situations. Witty, humorous, and disturbing, she calls her work "eye candy with a hint of acid."  Michael Scott, critic for the Vancouver Sun, writes "Birke, paint(s) with all the trilling unself-conscious gusto of nightingales singing." Gary Michael Dault, critic for the Globe and Mail has written that her paintings "possess a crackling visual inventiveness supported by an almost disconcerting virtuosity with the brush."

Birke's next solo exhibition will be in the Vancouver Bau-Xi Gallery, February, 2010.
