Gordon Wiens

Gordon Wiens studied painting at St. Lawrence College where he subsequently taught drawing and painting. Wiens' works have been exhibited in Vancouver and Toronto, and can be found in many private collections. Wiens creates contemporary abstract paintings in acrylic on canvas and paper. His most recent work reveals his interest in the transient, fragile nature of existence. "As part of my work I collect found objects and take photos of crumbling walls, faded signs, rotting flowers, and other debris in various states of erosion. These objects have been transformed by nature and imbued with a strange beauty. What is revealed in many of these weathered ruins is the interrelationship of orderly/chaotic, permanent/transient, and physical/spiritual qualities. It is within this context of connections and contradictions that my paintings are created. I never refer directly to source materials; rather I draw inspiration from their essence. Each painting develops through a process of layering using a personal vocabulary of marks and forms. Through this approach a unique image emerges that is open to interpretation by the viewer.''
