Jude Griebel’s work is influenced by the layered and subversive history of images that has resulted from Victorian Illustration, and which features so prominently in the collective childhood of generations. He recycles elements of this genre as a familiar nostalgic language that can be employed and subverted to express elements of his own personal history and imagination. Divorced from text, these works become mysterious and open-ended narratives to be deciphered and constructed by the viewer.

Jude Griebel received his BFA from the Emily Carr University of Art and Design and has since exhibited and worked as an artist in residence internationally. He is a recipient of grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Quebec and the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation. His work can be found in institutional collections including the Burnaby Art Gallery, Frans Masereel Centrum (Belgium), the Sakima Art Museum (Japan) and the Colart Contemporary Canadian Art Collection.
