Sheri Bakes
Sheri Bakes received a BFA from the Emily Carr University in 1998, and began exhibiting with the Bau-Xi Gallery in 2002. The base of her work is found in Rewach: spirit, breath or wind. And the powerful vulnerability born of life. Layers of paint are built up within a context of Canadian landscape. Poetic language is often used in the titles of these works with an interest in further exploring relationships between both physical and metaphorical aspects of life. Ideas of separation (subject as "object inhabiting space") are also considered in relationship to parameters, or the edge, of the canvas (ie: the container of life). Subtle forms of tension and intimacy ebb and flow like breath shared between the body (or land) and the atmosphere it inhabits. Sheri Bakes is interested in contemporary impressionism and exploring where the traditions of Emily Carr and the Group of Seven left off.
Kevin Chong wrote for the Globe and Mail, "Her brooding wind-swept scenes highlight tensions not only between the sky and land, but also between the physical landscape and the world of the mind."
Exhibitions of her work can be found at the Bau-Xi Gallery in Vancouver and Toronto, as well as the Foster/White Gallery in Seattle. Her work has been placed in numerous private collections across North America and Europe, and in permanent collections such as Emaar Properties, Dubai, UAE, Enuciate Conferencing, Toronto Dominion Bank, Vancouver General Hospital, and St. Paul's Hospital.
Bakes next solo exhibition takes place at Bau-Xi Vancouver, August 2010.
