Clive D'Oliveira
In D’Oliveira’s newest series, Bent Geometry, D'Oliveira seems to be poking fun at himself, and perhaps his prior rigidly precise work. This series gently bends the geometry into compositions that seem inherently wild for a painter like D’Oliveira, who religiously employed straight lines and grids. At first glance, the viewer sees a reductive palette of black, red, yellow and blue. Upon closer observation, we begin to notice subtle shifts. The blacks are not flat black, but subtle dark variations of eggplant, navy, indigo, burnt umber or green. Beside those ‘not-quite-blacks’ are eye-popping canary yellows, rich golds and blues, and a myriad of reds that can only be differentiated when comparing in person. These complex colours become even more exciting as they are paired together, in some cases playing with the viewer’s eye to suggest colours that aren’t even there. When looking at these works, the eye is simply not able to rest. D’Oliveira’s show offers us skilled compositions and a true experience in the enjoyment and celebration of colour.
For many years, D’Oliveira has been interested in linear pure abstraction, and the way in which colours react with one another. Some notable series include his Colour Bar series, a study in colour spurred by television colour bars, and his Crossword series, where D’Oliveira would choose a crossword and assign colours to the letters, often resulting in a miraculously balanced composition. 2007’s Phi series is based on the principle of the ‘Golden Mean’ and 6 pieces are now included in a group exhibition that will travel the US. Clive D'Oliveira was born in British Guiana, South America, in 1955. He emigrated to Canada in 1966, and in 1980 graduated from the Ontario College of Art. D’Oliveira’s contemporary colour field paintings have been widely exhibited, making him a well-known Canadian artist.
