Brent Boechler (1963-2015)

Brent Boechler was a self-taught artist who worked primarily in acrylic on panel and mixed-media on paper. His work is a combination of brushed, pushed and pulled paint that demonstrates equal concern for both process and subject matter. Boechler’s paintings have always featured a combination of drawing, mark making and layered painting; the artist’s process reflected this variety in its simultaneous dependence on rigorous, measured control and spontaneity. The result: luminous, abstract paintings on wood panel that are at once poetic in their simplicity and complexly layered to reveal Boechler’s painterly precision and visual philosophy. His works aim to free the eye from its continual attempts to recognize, and act as an invitation to unobstructed viewing.

Of his practice, the artist stated that, “Abstraction is rarely, if ever, purely and resolutely abstract. In this work, though the line separating figure and ground is diffuse, it is not absolutely sublimated. Figure resides in encounter with figure in a living and shifting environment, and within a sense of prelude of what is ahead.”

Boechler’s work is found in numerous private and corporate collections in Canada, US, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Brent passed away September, 2015 but his influence in the Canadian art community lives on through his paintings.
